The Big Care Debate

The Government has published Shaping the Future of Care Together, a public consultation document, or Green Paper, which spells out the options for reform of the way care is provided. This includes the controversial proposal to abolish Attendance Allowance and use the money to help plug the gap in funding for social care. There are fears this may also extend to the Care Component of Disability Living Allowance.
The Government is now holding a 16 week public consultation, the Big Care Debate, which runs until 13th November 2009. To participate, head to: www.careandsupport.direct.gov.uk

Waitrose in Huntingdon

Proposed legislation

The Office for Disability Issues has launched a new set of proposals called Right to Control.

The Right to Control is about people with disabilities having the choice and control over how state funded services are delivered, but goes beyond the initial changes introduced with Self-Directed Support/Personal Budgets.

Before introducing such far reaching measures, the government has issued a consultation paper. This will impact the lives of disabled people and how services will be provided in the future.Click link for the paper. The deadline for feedback is 30th September 2009 (see website).

New Working Name for DISH
At the AGM, it was decided to change the working name of DISH to Disability Huntingdonshire. With this new name, we hope to avoid any confusion over the nature of the organisation. The official title will still be Disability Information Service Huntingdonshire, and if you still find yourself calling us DISH, we won't mind.

2008 AGM
The 2008 Annual General Meeting was held at the Queen Elizabeth School Hall in Godmanchester on 9th December. Guest Speaker was the Paralympic Swimmer Fran Williamson, who won Silver and Bronze medals at this year's Beijing Games.
Fran was taught to swim in order to boost her confidence and improve co-ordination - until the age of 11 she was terrified of water. At the age of 13, she broke the World Record for the 100-metre backstroke. A World Champion in 2006, she has now accumulated six Paralympic medals, but Gold has so far eluded her. She aims to put that right in London in 2012. Fran believes disabled people should get more involved in sport:

"Being disabled is certainly not a hindrance. As long as you have the right attitude and support, you can do whatever you want."
