The
Disability Symbol
Look out for
employers using this symbol. This shows that they are positive about
employing
disabled people and will be keen to know about you. You can also
contact your
local disability employment adviser for information on employers that
use this
symbol.
People want
and need to work and people with a disability are no different. The
Government,
through the Employment Service, supports disabled people looking for
work or
who are having problems keeping their job because of their disability.
Specialist staff, usually based in local
jobcentres, provide
advice and operate a range of assessment, training and disability
service programmes.
Employment
Service Advisers can advise disabled people about local job vacancies
and
explain the various programmes
to help them into work. However, if you are disabled and additional
employment
support is needed because of the affects of your disability or health condition, you should make an appointment with
the
Disability Employment Adviser (DEA).

Disability
Service Teams
Specialist
teams comprising Occupational Psychologists, Technical Consultants and
Disability Employment Advisers provide both practical and financial
help to
assist people with disabilities in finding or keeping employment.
Programmes
The Disability
Employment Adviser is the point of contact for each of these programmes:
Employment
Assessment
Can identify a
disabled person’s potential, abilities and strengths and be the basis
of
an action plan for work and/or training. The Disability Employment
Adviser will
carry out an initial assessment and, if necessary, arrange an enhanced
assessment by an Occupational Psychologist.
Training
It may be
decided that to improve a disabled person’s career prospects there is a
need to update skills or learn new ones. The Disability Employment
Adviser can
arrange appropriate training courses.
Under the
“New Deal” scheme programmes to assist
disabled people into work continue to be introduced:
Job
Introduction Scheme
This scheme
allows a disabled person to try out a job for a few weeks. The
Employment
Service helps the employer by making a contribution towards the
employee’s salary.
Access
to Work
Aims
to help disabled people tackle any practical problems in the work area
or in getting to work. It can
provide a communicator or reader for those with sensory
impairments, fund some of the costs of adaptations or special equipment
in the
work area and, if public transport cannot be used, help a disabled
person get
to work. The Employment Service will approve help up to a maximum of
three
years but will consider renewing after that period.
WORKSTEP
(Supported Employment Programme )
Should a
disability make it particularly difficult to find work or keep a job,
help may
be available under this programme.
Supported jobs can
be with any employer or in supported units run by local authorities,
voluntary
organizations or Remploy Ltd. Contact the
Disability
Employment Adviser for more details.
Disabled
persons eligible for WORKSTEP, may receive
support
under the Homeworkers Scheme. The schemes
are open to
disabled people who want to run a business, usually from their own
home. An
income supplement and financial assistance may be available. The
Disability
Employment Adviser is the contact point and can advise whether this
scheme
applies to you.
When looking for home-based work, be wary of scams - avoid any offer of
work
which asks you to pay something in advance.
