Citizens Advice Bureau

The CAB helps people to tackle their problems head on with advice, information and practical support. The office is open Monday to Thursday 9.30 – 12.30 with an appointment-only and telephone service operating Monday to Thursday 12.30 to 3.30. The Huntingdon CAB also has other offices in St. Ives, Ramsey and St. Neots that are manned during the following hours:

DISH provides an information and advice service to disabled people, carers and professionals in the Huntingdonshire area. DISH can give advice on all aspects of disability including welfare benefits, employment, transport and leisure. Advice clinics are held in Huntingdon, St.Ives, St. Neots, Warboys and Papworth.

A wide range of material is avail-able on loan through a network of 48 libraries. This includes books for people who prefer items in languages other than English. Books at all reading levels are provided as well as large print and story tapes. Films on video can be hired for people with a hearing impairment. Most videos have closed captions. DVD’s, music CD’s and music scores are also on offer. Some services incur a charge but there are exemptions for certain users. For further details contact your local library. There is now only one contact number for all libraries: Cambridge Direct on 0845 045 5225 (8am to 8pm, Mon to Sat).

The new Papworth library in Pendrill Court has a range of specially adapted computers that can be used by people with disabilities. One package can be set to use symbols and drawings allowing people with learning difficulties easier access to text and ways of communicating. Another piece of technology translates letters and e-mails into Braille which can then be printed on the Braille printer/embosser. The library is open Tues, 10am – 1.30 and 2.30 – 5pm, Wed and Thurs 2.30pm – 8pm, Saturday mornings from 10.am – 1pm. Closed Monday and Friday.

Trained counsellors are available to offer help adapted to the needs of the individual and families of those with drink related problems. Clients are normally seen within a few days of contact and, following an assessment interview, regular appointments are available. There is also a walk-in service operating 3pm-5pm every Tuesday.

24 hour answerphone service. Aich offers a free, confidential counselling service for people aged 14 – 25 years. The organisation aims to enable young people to make informed choices and decisions about their own lives.
